The South East Asian bar scene is developing fast, with growing global recognition, expertise and exciting new venues. But what does the scene really look like? What can the rest of the world learn from them? How can brands, the industry, and guests engage and understand the region? Most classic cocktails and spirits were created in the US and Europe, with ingredients and botanicals from those locations – mint, wormwood, basil, cherries, elderflower. But with South East Asia’s extremely high flora diversity it has a plethora of native ingredients, encouraging a creative freedom away from classics: the scene is booming with unique cocktails and bar programmes that delve deep into storytelling. Bars are incorporating well-known international spirits, with local ingredients, spirits and flavours to craft new concepts of what a delicious drink looks like. With panelists Koh Yung Shen, founder of Backdoor Bodega, Malaysia (Best Cocktail Menu 2025 50Best Bars), and Vijay Mudalia of award-winning Singapore bar, Native, host Anna Sulan Masing will discuss South East Asian’s unique bar scene, its ability to have a global outlook whilst reflecting and celebrating local flavours and stories, and what the future holds in this region.
